A good & provocative article. Generally, the buying power argument doesn't wash with your average middle aged exec because their whole life is about trying to gate out the numerous vendors and partners knocking on his door telling him "this market is worth $Xbn".

The key here is, however, what you allude to in your post - influence and also, importantly, not mentioned - product development. Facebook and SMS were both born of the youth market, the latter has provided $1 trillion in revenues to the mobile industry alone - all discovered by youth (SMS was originally invented by network engineers as an alert system only).

So to convince the boss you need to do something different - the "worth $x bn" is tried, tested and everyone's doing.

Tell him about Harley Davison. The average owner is now 51. Not exactly the young, cool brand it once was in the 60s. Now ask him how old Harley owners will be in 20 yrs time? Now you get why your boss needs to build a dialogue with youth.

Did you catch WorkFastTV's recent interview talking exactly about this topic?

They're using social media in 13,000 of their stores and 22,000 employees using the system!

64% of their retail employees are age 16-25, so its a no-brainer.

But the big part is that 'Corporate' backed the effort - from the ground up.
