Obviously it's a lesson learned for broadcasting. Have you seen @robinson_crusoe (www.twitter.com/robinson_crusoe)?

For a fantastic and smart show like Mad Men, AMC could have worked better to resolve a small issue. Their characters came to life….is that so wrong? It’s actually great PR for the show. Your advice was right on. The way PR professionals interact with journalists is the way the Twitter guy should’ve interacted with the TV show from the start. New TV shows, especially cable shows on a network like AMC need as much PR as possible. There are agencies like 5WPR in New York and Los Angeles that use strategic communications and great PR tools. They create exceptional media buzz for clients.

And then there's the simple fact that what the Mad Men folks did was legal. So I guess one additional step would be KNOW YOUR IP LAW. I talked to two legal experts on that:

Was it really a gaffe by AMC, or a clever simulation of a gaffe, by the company that is the registered owner of sterlingcooperadvertising.com, namely, AMC? A simple WHOIS search reveals that AMC owns that domain. It's not independent and probably never was.

In a world where art imitates life imitating art, and everyone falls for the back story of an indy student movie called "The Blair Witch Project," would it be that surprising for an online marketing firm to advise a cable channel best known for showing movies from the 40s that it could generate some buzz for Mad Men by conjuring up some fake characters and then pretending to sue the perpetrators, and then apologizing for making a fuss?

James Jesus Angleton of the CIA once spoke about a world of mirrors and reflections and smoke and all that deception stuff. It's not just happening in spyworld.
