I think it is quite possible Google might implement an ad network like that; they seem to have the strengths in location id, user inference, and now it seems social network reach to make it work well. I'd suspect these would be text ads, no one needs more than a short "twitter" to be called to action, and words are still the easiest form of complex message for literate humans to parse.

Beyond that, social networking is about how we relate to the world in terms of a mesh of people connections, and how they connect to other people, and how those people connect to other people. This is like the velocity of money factor in economics - potentially Google could boil this down to a number of an individual's value in achieving market reach.

As we have moved from an era of push marketing to pull marketing, the ability to introduce potentially viral concepts is critical. But for something to go even a little viral, it needs to be introduced at the right entry points. Put in terms of Malcolm Gladwell's Tipping Point, you'd want to introduce something to a Maven of Mavens (sorry Malcolm!) to get the fast growth in the targeted market.

Naturally Maven-hood is not a universal position one holds on all subjects, but varies by subject matter. Google, perhaps, could identify the Maven factor of one's social network, by subject area.

Phew!

If they haven't thought this through yet, maybe they should give us a call, right?

cheers

I think that your scenario is likely coming in the future, but I think it'll create backlash. I'm curious how many people would support getting ads on their phone, even if they result in having a good time with your friends. It's possible it'd be met with acclaim and I'll admit I hate advertising, but I don't see it working that way.

I do think that it's intriguing that Google is exploring this space and it'll be interesting to see what comes of it.
